Feeding the frail, elderly and the house-bound

Home-delivered meals are a tasty blessing in disguise for many residents of the Canterbury Local Government Area who are unable to shop, cook or leave their homes.

Canterbury Meals on Wheel, a not-for-profit organisation based in Campsie, delivers 100 to 200 meals a day to their registered clients. Volunteer drivers distribute meals five days a week to 18 different suburbs including Belmore, Punchbowl, Earlwood and Hurlstone Park.

“Our clients include the frail aged senior, a younger disabled person and/or carers who can’t leave their charge. We operate our own kitchen and can make individualised meals to cater for our clients’ needs,” said Christine Pape, Manager of Canterbury Meals on Wheels Inc.

“Aside from preparing and supplying meals, our volunteers also provide our clients with some outside friendly interaction and are a regular safety check for those who live by themselves which can bring peace of mind to some.”

Canterbury Meals on Wheels has just recently completed works converting a dry storage area into a freezer after receiving an $18,973 donation from the Canterbury League Club.

“We can now offer our clients more choices in meals and effectively reduce costs associated with running the seven standalone freezers previously,” said Christine.
