What are the responsibilities of your job?

I am responsible for signing up new members, and providing information about the Club to our members and guests. Working at the club reception, I am also the first point of contact for all phone and email enquiries.

What energizes you to work at Canterbury?

I have worked at Canterbury for 20 years, and have always enjoyed my job – the Club has a great work place culture. The friends and colleagues I have worked with in my time at Canterbury ensure that work is enjoyable and often fun, which keeps me motivated and energized in my role.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I won Canterbury’s Employee of the Year award several years ago. It was a surprise at the time, and I am grateful for the acknowledgement that Canterbury always shows to their employees.

What’s the best advice you can give someone just starting out in their hospitality career?

Be patient, and to listen and learn from the experience of your colleagues. Many of the staff at Canterbury have worked with us for a number of years and can provide a new starter with a wealth of hospitality experience.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you so far this week?

On a personal level, the best thing that has happened to me this week was seeing my grandchildren over the weekend. I love spending time with the grand kids, especially when I get to cook for them, so I would have to say that’s topped my best things list for this week.

How do you like to start your day?

I usually start my day with a cup  of tea before getting ready for work. On the days where I’m not working, I enjoy going for walks in the morning while listening to music. I try and start my days in a positive and relaxing way before handling whatever I may have planned for that day.

Can you recommend a book you’ve read recently and why?

I recently read Elton John’s autobiography. I have been a fan of his for many years and have also seen him in concert many times. It was a very enjoyable read, as I like finding out more about the real life of famous people that I am a fan of.

If you could get a new skill in 10 minutes what would it be and why?

It would be the ability to draw. I would not consider myself to be a good drawer, however this is something I have always wished I was able to do. I often watch my grandson drawing and when he shows me what he has done, I’m always amazed at how good the pictures are.
