St Basil’s Shed in the Lane

A new Men’s Shed in Lakemba has proven to be a big hit with the senior’s community of Canterbury.

Opened in 2012 with the financial help of Canterbury League Club, St Basil’s Men’s Shed is geared towards people of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

Men’s Shed such as this as well as the Canterbury Men’s Shed are important to the local community because it gives men of a certain age a safe place to socialise while working on projects like restoring old furniture. It is hoped that this type of supportive environment will encourage members to speak more openly about health and wellbeing issues.

Though this shed is still in its infancy stage, it is growing with the help of the community through word of mouth and advertisements in local and Greek newspapers.

“We feel that the project is robust and set up on good foundations with excellent accommodation and equipment so we are pleased to watch it grow slowly but at steady rate,” said Markella Xerri, St Basil’s General Manager of Community Services.

This year Canterbury League Club has once again donated $25,000 to St Basil’s Men’s Shed through their ClubGrants program. The funding will go towards maintaining a Shed Co-ordinator, bills and tools for the workshop.

St Basil’s Men’s Shed, ‘The Shed in the Lane’ operates every Wednesday 10:00am to 2:30pm. For further information please contact 9784 3251.
