Children in the Canterbury – Bankstown area are improving their numeracy and literacy skills through help of the Learning Links program.

Learning Links was established as a not for profit organisation in 1972 by parents who were concerned about their children’s education and ability to learn.

Currently, Learning Links provides an early intervention service for children with learning difficulties and disabilities.

Canterbury League Club, Campsie RSL, Canterbury- Hurlstone Park RSL Club and The Lantern Club have banded together to help support and fund Learning Links and provide essential resources that the organisation needs.

Canterbury also hosts a Charity Cash Housie at The Lakemba Club each week which helps raises money for Learning Links.

‘We recognised the need to help children in the community that are experiencing learning difficulties reach their full potential,’ said George Coorey Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

‘The programs that we support include Reading for Life, Counting for Life and Educational Support in Schools. Over the 3-year period of involvement we have also provided waived room hire and volunteer staff members who assisted in the buddy programs.’

Since the inception of the program, more than 200 students across 15 schools have been assisted and the numbers are expected to grow.

More than 80 teachers have had professional development to help their students through tailored workshops. This year’s professional learning workshop for teachers will be held at Canterbury League Club.
