Charity initiative extends helping hand to the homeless

Order of Malta Community Care Kitchen, powered by volunteers, offers vital support to the homeless. With Canterbury’s $2,000 donation, 60 hygiene packs and coats were provided to the homeless, making a significant difference in their lives.

Order of Malta devote themselves to creating a sense of belonging through initiatives such as community meals, educational programs, and youth engagement activities. Specifically, to address the needs of Sydney’s homeless population, the organisation has aimed to combat the impact of COVID-19 on the homeless population in Sydney. As such, the program has expanded to include ‘hygiene’ packs, that provide basic toiletries and socks, to protect this vulnerable segment of our community from illness, oral decay, and trench foot.

“What began as a heartfelt initiative by a single member has blossomed into a transformative movement” said Michelle Rees, Order of Malta’s spokesperson. With personal funding, the initiative kick-started the design and production of 400 coats aimed at providing warmth and protection to individuals experiencing homelessness. Now, two decades later, this program has expanded extensively, manufacturing and distributing 5,000 coats annually across every state and territory. “This remarkable endeavour ensures that the homeless are shielded from the harsh winter weather, leaving a lasting impact on communities nationwide”, said Mrs Rees.

“Homelessness is a significant issue in our society, particularly during a time where the cost of living is on the rise. We appreciate the work that Order of Malta do to help people in need and are pleased to be able to contribute to such a fantastic cause” said Peter Winchester, Chairman of Canterbury League club.
