Jacky has been part of the Canterbury team for more than a year, making the move from retail to hospitality to challenge herself in a completely new environment. While she didn’t see herself as the most outgoing person when she first started, her time at Canterbury has helped her step outside her comfort zone, build confidence and discover just how much she enjoys working with people.
A new challenge
Before joining Canterbury, Jacky’s experience had been entirely in retail. Looking for a change, she decided to take a chance on hospitality and find a role that would allow her to interact with people more.
“I wanted to try something different and gain experience in hospitality. I wanted to challenge myself and work in a completely different environment.”
More than a year on, Jacky has embraced the change and says one of her favourite things about the role is that no two shifts are ever the same.
“Some shifts can be calm and others can become extremely busy very quickly. You’re constantly moving around, running trays, taking orders and working with the rest of the team. I actually enjoy that no two shifts are exactly the same.”
Confidence that comes with experience
For Jacky, one of the biggest changes since joining Canterbury has been her confidence.
“Situations that would have made me nervous when I first started have become a normal part of my job. I think the biggest difference is simply how much more confident I am now.”
She also credits the people around her for making the experience so positive. Having coworkers she can laugh with, rely on and learn from has made even the busiest shifts more enjoyable.
“I think the people you work with can completely change how you feel about coming to work.”
Life outside Canterbury
When she’s not at work, Jacky can usually be found challenging herself at the gym, procrastinating in her university library, or spending quality time with her friends and family.
And her advice for anyone thinking about applying to Canterbury? Simply give it a go.
“You don’t have to fit the typical idea of someone who works in hospitality. Canterbury has pushed me outside of my comfort zone in a really positive way. You meet so many different people, learn a lot and build confidence without even really noticing it happening.”
