After school drop-in room getting youths off the streets

Belmore Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) has just completed an exciting new drop-in room to entice youth off the streets courtesy of a $20,000 donation from Canterbury League Club and Bulldogs Rugby League Club.

The Drop-In Room is a permanent space in the club and it will provide a safe area for local youth to hang out with their friends. It has been equipped with comfortable lounges and furniture, televisions and XBox consoles, a drum set and guitars, and quality sound systems which will be a popular hit amongst young people.

The club will also run occasional specialised events like movie nights and game days to encourage more youth to utilise the space.

Linda Burney, Member for Canterbury, and Mayor of Canterbury, Brian Robson, were on hand for the official ribbon cutting ceremony last Friday.

“By having a space like this to go to, local youth will be safe and confident and will have a place to go to rather than hang out on the streets. Hopefully by getting kids off the streets, this will help decrease youth crime and delinquent behaviour in our local area,” said Andrew Shenouda, Belmore PCYC Club Manager.

Belmore PCYC currently have over 300 junior members who will potentially benefit from the drop-in room and members will have to log in every time they attend. This will help the club monitor how often the room is being used and whether there is any significant impact on local crime figures once the room is opened and operational.

“Grassroots projects like this do more than benefit young people; it also helps the overall local community. Young people will have a secure environment to hang out in and will be spending their time in a positive way, and their parents or carers won’t have to stress and worry about what their kids are up to after school,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

The room is free to use with a PCYC membership. Belmore PCYC offers various types of youth activities from boxing, taekwondo, basketball, drum lessons and kids playgroups. For more information, contact Belmore PCYC on 9759 4934.
