Bowel-ed over by Canterbury donation

Help for Hirschsprung Disease (Help4HD), a leading charity for children suffering from bowel disease in Australia, were recently bowel-ed over by a large donation from Canterbury League Club.

Hirschsprung’s disease is a congenital condition that affects the large intestine and causes problems with bowel movements, passing stools and incontinence.

Help4HD was created to make the experience of families with children born with Hirschsprung’s disease and other bowel disorders, a little easier by providing special toiletry kits and Buddee Bears.

“Our toiletry kits are distributed to children’s hospitals in Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland to help school-aged children manage the side effects of bowel disease (such as soiling and incontinence) with confidence, particularly at school,” said Georgina Altas, Founder of Help for Hirschsprung Disease.

Buddee Bears are specially made teddy bears with a stoma spot on their bellies which are given to children undergoing stoma or bowel surgery. The bears are the only ones of their kind to have a stoma – to match and give comfort to the child who will now have a lifelong stoma opening on their abdomen.

Canterbury’s donation will be used to produce toiletry kits and Buddee Bears to support more children.

“We are coming into our third year [of operations] and the demand for our support has only grown. We would like to be able to help these children, inform parents and their families, and raise awareness of bowel disease for many years to come,” said Georgina.

Help4HD is also holding a special Ladies Luncheon fundraiser at Canterbury League Club on Friday September 2019 at 11am. Tickets are $150pp and will include a 3-course lunch, sparkling wine on arrival, live music, lucky door prizes, raffles and live auctions.
