Canterbury League Club was announced as the winner of a ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Award at the recent awards night on 15 October 2017 in recognition of the Club’s work to feed the homeless in the city with local Punchbowl group, Maronites on Mission.

Awards in nine different categories were up for grabs on the night, with the category of ‘Disability, Welfare & Social Inclusion’ being the most highly-contested with projects from 22 other clubs in the running. It was a dazzling gala night attended by 1,100 industry leaders, board members and colleagues.

“Our relationship with Maronites started simply – they needed a new van to continue their food runs to feed the homeless and we had the means to provide them one,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury.

Since that simple start in 2013, the relationship has grown to include a staff volunteering program where staff donate their time every month to go out in the MoM food van to help distribute over 150 hot meals, sandwiches, drinks, snacks and fruit to two locations in the city.

“This award wouldn’t be possible without the wonderful support of staff who help out every month, the chef team who prepare all the nutritious meals and all other staff involved – thank you to ClubsNSW for this amazing recognition of our staff and our community work,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury.
