Happy 104th birthday to Bessie Corbett

Posted on Wednesday, 31 July 2019

Last month Bessie celebrated her 104th birthday, making her our oldest Canterbury Member!

She joined Canterbury League Club together with her late husband, Walter Corbett, over 30 years ago back when they lived in Greenacre. Bessie still enjoys having lunch with her family every Sunday at the Club which is only a hop, skip and a jump away from her Bexley nursing home.

“We enjoy the food and it is very easy to relax at Canterbury. The Club is now well-designed with friendly staff and it is a good place for people to meet and socialise with various areas to sit with a drink, watch sports or eat a meal,” said Bessie.

Bessie was born in Scotland in 1915 and moved to Australia when she was 4 years old. Bessie met her husband at a dance in their twenties and married soon after. She worked at the restaurant at Taronga Zoo when she was younger and then at Mansours Furnishers in Bexley until she retired.

The pair had two daughters and twin boys, and the family weathered through many challenges including the Great Depression in the 1930s and then again during World War II when Walter served in the army stationed at Cowra.

Now Bessie enjoys her time with her 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Congratulations to Bessie for reaching this wonderful achievement of 104 years old and we hope you had a great birthday!
