Koorana Family Fun Day a Joy to Local Families

A Canterbury League Club donation was used by Koorana Child and Family Services to put lots of happy smiles on the faces of local children and their families at their recent January school holiday free Fun Day held at Gazzard Park in Yagoona.

Koorana Child and Family Services, a specialist early intervention service, planned the event to create a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, offering a variety of play-based activities tailored to different interests, abilities and sensory needs.

“Children have the opportunity to engage in sensory play, creative craft, dramatic and imaginative play, and movement-based activities,” said Morgan Fitzpatrick, CEO of Koorana Child & Family Services.

“Each experience is thoughtfully designed to be flexible and accessible, allowing children to participate in ways that feel comfortable and meaningful to them. Importantly, developing their problem-solving skills, creativity and independence.”

The event also provided the opportunity for families to connect with other Koorana support services including Positive Behaviour Support, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology, and Physiotherapy.

For families caring for children with disability or additional needs, access to inclusive and supportive activities can be even more limited so free family event days are a welcome relief to them.

“We saw that families were beginning to reduce their care days for children and attend our playgroups more regularly,” Mrs Fitzpatrick said. “We knew that meant that school holidays might be particularly tough, as families choose between care options and affordability.”

“Canterbury is proud to assist with a $9,000 donation to host two of these great events for our community since it helps create meaningful connections between families and essential service providers,” said Peter Winchester, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.
