McGrath Breast Care Nurses supporting families in need

Statistics show that one in every eight Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the time they turn 85.

The McGrath Foundation believes that every person living with breast cancer, regardless of location or background, should have access to a breast care nurse. They currently have 100 McGrath Breast Care Nurses spread across Australia but estimates that 150 are needed to ensure that every family in this situation has access to optimal care.

Breast Care Nurses are typically experienced nurses with a background in cancer nursing, breast care nursing and women’s health. They work with the patient and their family; becoming a source of information for any questions, and a physical liaison between the patient and their treatment specialist.

According to the McGrath Foundation, one of the most important benefits of having access to a breast care nurse is the valuable emotional support and friendship that each nurse can offer while the patient and their families are undergoing a difficult time in their lives.

Understanding the importance of health and breast cancer awareness, Canterbury League Club showed their support by donating $1,000 which will help the McGrath foundation expand its national network of McGrath Breast Care Nurses.

“It is important that anyone facing this disease should have access to one of these amazing nurses since their knowledge and caring will certainly have a positive impact. It is an uncertain time for these families but support provided by the McGrath Breast Care Nurses can make a big difference in their lives,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.
