Meet Anjana
Anjana, or AJ as she’s known to staff and long-time patrons, has been a positive influence at Bakehouse Cafe since it opened in the beginning of October 2016. Working primarily as the cafe barista, she takes pride in creating the perfect cup of coffee, complete with gorgeous coffee art! This month we speak to AJ about her career in hospitality, and what motivates her at work.
Every time when people see you at the Bakehouse you are always full of energy and smiles, what motivates you at work?
You never know what people are going through – spreading positivity doesn’t hurt anyone, it cheers them up! The people at Bakehouse are one of many reasons why I am always so positive and the smiles you get from a satisfied and happy customers!
What led you to a career in hospitality? Why did you choose to work at Canterbury?
I initially chose tourism and hospitality to come to Australia to further study; now I’m passionate about hospitality because I think it’s life-changing. It gives me a platform to explore, meet new people and learn from different cultures while at the same time delivering my skills and customer service. Canterbury has helped me grow my personality and I am so grateful to be the part of a team where everyone is so supportive and cheerful.
What knowledges, skills and experiences do you think are needed to do this job well?
To master a barista role, you need to have a basic knowledge of coffee and then apply techniques that you’ve learned whilst making the coffee. If you are really passionate about coffee, than you will always find ways to establish yourself well in this field as long as you never give up.
What’s the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career in hospitality?
It takes time to gain experience; take it slow and learn as you go. No one is perfect, identify your flaws and build on it.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Having only one child, I have the responsibility to cherish my child as much as possible. On my days off, I love going out with my family and enjoy spending time with them.
What’s a secret talent that no one knows about?
Umm a secret talent? I have plenty, where to start, I cannot figure it out, so let it be secret for now!
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
When it comes to singing I am not a great singer but if I had to pick one song then it would be one by my one and only favourite – Ed Sheeran.
If you won the lottery, what would you do?
If I ever won the lottery, I would firstly help people in need around the world who are suffering due to many reasons, and I would spend the rest on a world tour with my family.
