Over $75,000 Raised for Homelessness and Rough Sleepers
Last Friday night, Canterbury League Club CEO Greg Pickering joined 97 other community leaders at Belmore Sports Ground for the Canterbury-Bankstown Council Mayor’s Lights Out Sleepout, helping raise awareness and vital funds for people experiencing homelessness.
On the night, Canterbury-Bankstown Council Mayor Bilal El-Hayek announced an incredible $75,000 was raised through everyone’s collective efforts, highlighting the generosity and community spirit behind the event.
The evening brought together local leaders, businesses and community members for a night of connection, reflection and fundraising. Participants shared a BBQ dinner and watched the Panthers v Bulldogs game before settling in for the night with just a rubber mat and cardboard tent as their shelter.
“I came ready with a sleeping bag, a pillow and plenty of warm layers but it was still a cold night. Whilst I only had a small glimpse of what it feels like to sleep rough, the night was still a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by people without a safe and secure place to call home,” said Greg Pickering.
“I’d like to thank everyone who donated through my fundraising link – your generosity has helped raise $38,571!”
The Board of Canterbury League Club will also proudly contribute an additional $5,000 donation, bringing the total contribution to $43,571.
