Refereeing a positive contribution to the league community

Tackles, shoves, moaning players, back chat and nit-picking coaches are all part of the game but Canterbury-Bankstown District Rugby League Referees Association’s (CBDRLRA) referees know how to take it in their stride.

Refereeing is not a job without its own dangers but CBDRLRA tries to make sure their referees stay safe by continual on-field training and support.

Financial support for these developments has come from their long-time sponsorship from Canterbury League Club and funds have been used to purchase things like on-field communication equipment, coaching tools and uniforms.

This year Canterbury League Club has donated another $10,000 to CBDRLRA which contributes to the general running of the association, the development of refereeing and also social events.

Anyone can join up to be a referee as long as they are 14 years or older. CBDRLRA oversees their training courses and on-field assessments to assist in their development to become competent referees.

At this point CBDRLRA has more than 110 members and from that approximately 50 currently referee in the Canterbury Bankstown Junior League.

“Don’t expect to be refereeing on television in your first year; it takes many years to develop the skills necessary to referee at NRL level,” said David Abood, President of CBDRLRA.

“However there is much to be gained from becoming a referee – the opportunity to keep fit while earning some pocket money, be involved and contribute to the game of rugby league and the chance to make lots of new friends.”
