Shelter animals get a helping hand

A huge thank you and well done to Canterbury’s 10 staff volunteers who spent the day with the animals at RSPCA NSW Yagoona.

Aside from cleaning out rabbit and guinea pig hutches, walking and bathing shelter dogs awaiting adoption, as well as cuddling tons of cute kittens and cats, staff volunteers also took part in an educational workshop to learn about animal welfare and the work of RSPCA NSW which is run by a RSPCA Officer.

“The RSPCA Officer we had was incredible – she explained what officers are allowed to do legally in cases of animal abuse, and gave some example cases. It gave me a good understanding of what officers have to consider when they are called out to a site and what they can legally do,” said Barbara Moran, long-time Canterbury staff member and dedicated animal lover.

“For me being the nutty animal lover I am, the whole day was a highlight. I walked away buoyed by the whole experience.”

Staff volunteered at RSPCA NSW as part of Canterbury’s ongoing support of the community through their Staff Community Program.

Aside from providing staff volunteers the Club has also long been a supporter of the work that RSPCA NSW does – in the past seven years the Club has donated over $63,000 which has gone towards the cost of rescuing, caring for, treating and rehabilitating animals as well as helping fund their POOPs (Pets of Older Persons) program.

“Our Corporate Support Day program is extremely important to RSPCA NSW. On the day the corporate team will clean out animal enclosures, help with general maintenance and provide enrichment for our shelter animals like walking dog or spending time with our shelter cats. This then allows the shelter staff to focus more on training or working in other areas of the shelter. To have ten extra pair of hands helping out in the shelter is absolutely amazing and we are so thankful for the support of Canterbury League Club.
