Over 60 school principals and teachers from surrounding areas attended a Principals Forum at Canterbury League Club, co-hosted by Burwood Police Area Command and Campsie Police Area Command, to share information on how to keep our youth safe.

“Today Burwood Police Area Command and Campsie Police Area Command came together with 60 principals across our area to talk about local youth-related issues and ways we can work together as a team to look after our children,” said Christine McDonald, Superintendent – Commander of Burwood Police Area Command.

“The key takeaway from today was that it takes a village to protect a village and working together, we don’t want any child to slip through the cracks. It’s really important that we come up with solutions to keep them in school, to keep them engaged, and to prevent them from a life of crime.”

Commander McDonald said: “From what I saw today [from the Principals Forum], there are many committed people that have the same direction to look after our children.”

Representatives came from local primary and secondary schools from the area including Earlwood Public School, Canterbury Boys High School, Canterbury Girls High School, Enfield Public School, and Holy Innocent’s Catholic Primary School, just to name a few.

Topics discussed included personal safety in school, traffic issues, hate crime, and the role of youth officers in the community.

One of the attendees, Ms Siobhan Van Den Nieuwenhuizen from Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School in North Strathfield, found it helpful to learn about the relationship between schools and the police.

“It was a really good opportunity to hear from different police officers, understand the different roles they have [in the community] and who to contact when needs arise…or when we need youth-related advice.”
