VALE, BARRY ‘PUNCHY’ NELSON

Posted on Monday, 3 May 2021

Canterbury is deeply saddened by the passing of Dual Life Member Barry Nelson at the age of 89.

Barry was an enormous part of the Bulldogs family.

Joining Canterbury in 1950 as a second rower, Barry played in 61 First Grade matches between 1954 and 1961.

In addition, he played one game for NSW in 1960, where he unfortunately suffered a broken jaw.

During the 1980s, Nelson became club president of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. It was during that time that he and secretary Peter Moore, oversaw a very successful period that yielded 4 premierships. He was Canterbury League Club President from May 1982- January 2003.

Barry was a Dual Life Member of Canterbury League Club and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He was awarded Life Membership of Canterbury in 1993 and the Bulldogs in 2004. He was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nelson family at this time.
