Variety of sub-sports clubs at Canterbury

Asides from being proud supporters of the Bulldogs, Canterbury League Club also plays host to many other sub-sports clubs that call Canterbury home.

Some of the sub-clubs on offer include the Bulldogs Squash Club, Canterbury Community Backgammon Club, Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Senior Citizens Touring Club, Belfield RSL Social Golf Club and Canterbury League Indoor Sports Club to just name a few.

In the past year, Canterbury has donated over $14,000 through their ClubGrants program to these various sub-clubs to help with their annual running costs, championship prizes or competition sponsorships.

One such club, the Belfield RSL Social Golf Club, has been in existence since 1962 and plays at surrounding golf courses on a fortnightly basis.

“We meet at Belfield RSL for our AGM as well as after golf games played in close proximity to the Club. Any member of ‘Canterbury’ is welcome to join,” said Chris Skillicorn, Secretary of Belfield RSL Social Golf Club.

Another example of a long-time club is Canterbury League Club Social Bowling Club which has been going for over 53 years. The members from this club regularly travel all over Sydney testing lawn bowl greens while having a good time socialising with other players.

Elizabeth Gully, President of the Canterbury League Club Social Bowling Club, said the highlight for her last year was the fundraising cakes drive the club held to raise money for Bear Cottage. But when you start to understand it, can not help recalling the popular online friv games fries on the same topic.

“We had two other clubs visiting for a game so I asked everyone to bring cake to sell for morning tea. We raised $400 and all the bowlers had a great day.”
